Several times over the past year, someone has looked at a piece of my art, studied it, walked away and then came back to it and said, “I have to have this.” I’m always curious about what it is that draws someone into a particular piece. So, I ask.
The story that I am told is one of sorrow and joy. For one woman it is about the loss of her mother and how this piece of art reminds her of her mother and is also joyful. Another young man told me about the recent loss of his father, a man larger than life, and how in this piece of art, he saw his father’s boldness. And then there were three pieces with Ginko leaves that a woman bought for herself and her sisters, because her mother who had passed away, loved Ginko leaves. The colors and the image would bring her and her sister’s happy memories to temper the sadness.
I recently lost my 92-year-old father-in-law. He was a harness horse racer. One of the things we chose to keep were his “colors” – the shirt he wore during races. And there it is again, sorrow and joy. The loss of him and the memory of the career that he loved.
